Dental Sedation
The Benefits of Sedation for Nervous Patients
Dental sedation techniques have made it much easier for people who are afraid of the dentist to have regular dental work done without anxiety. The basic premise of sedation dentistry is that the dentists prescribes or administers medication that helps to calm a patient or helps the patient to fall asleep during the dental procedure. Once the medication wears off, the patient awakens to discover that the dental work has been completed. The patient doesn't remember any of the sensations of the dental procedure at all.
Take the Fear out of Dentistry
There are many reasons why a person becomes anxious when considering dental work. Some patients have experienced pain the past and associate that pain with any dental procedure. There are individuals who suffer from a phobia of dentists or dental tools. There are many patients undergo massive oral deterioration and pain rather than visit a dentist for treatment. The use of oral sedatives can help to calm a patient's nerves so that they will be able to bring themselves to go to a dentist and have necessary dental work performed without fear.
Dental Sedation Techniques
Dental sedation can be by several different methods. The level of sedation depends on the anxiety level the patient exhibits. Some patients are soothed by simply inhaling nitrous oxide or laughing gas. For others small doses of anxiety medication are adequate, while others require sedatives that will cause them to fall asleep entirely. Also there are the additional options of IV sedation or even general anesthesia where the patient is put totally asleep. Oral sedation is the most popular form of sedation dentistry because it does not require injections. The dentist prescribes a mild sedative and instructs a patient to take a dose an hour before each the visit. The sedative helps to relax the patient which makes it easier for the dentist and the patient to have a successful visit.
Healthy Teeth are an Important Part of Overall Health
Research shows that a persons overall health can be greatly impacted by their oral health. When a person's gums are infected or even swollen for a long period of time, it can cause the rest of the body to react by becoming inflamed as well. This can lead to heart attacks in the worst case. Oral sedation dentistry makes it possible for even the most skittish patient to have their oral health taken care of, which will make them healthier in general. Dentists who are trained in oral sedation therapy find that their patients are more cooperative and most dental procedures go more smoothly.
